The coral snake occurs throughout the entire state including the northern keys. The species extends north to southeastern North Carolina and west to eastern Texas and northeastern Mexico.

Adult Size: This very secretive snake commonly attains 2½ feet in length. The record authenticated size is 47½ inches.

When the eastern coral snake bites, it usually holds tightly while the venom takes effect. Generally, people get bitten by coral snakes while attempting to pick one up.

The Eastern coral snake (Micrurus fulvius), or harlequin snake, is found in the SE United States and N Mexico. It is a burrowing snake with a small, blunt head and a cylindrical body, averaging 21/2 ft (75 cm) in length.

A mimic of the eastern coral snake (Micrurus fulvius), scarlet kingsnakes typically have alternating bands of red, black, and yellow in which red touches black but not yellow (in eastern coral snakes red touches yellow but not black.
