The eastern gray squirrel and eastern fox squirrel are among the most sought-after small game animals in Minnesota. A squirrel pressed in hiding against a tree is a challenging target.
The eastern gray squirrel chatters when disturbed.
The Fox Squirrel, Sciurus niger, is found in pinelands statewide except for the Keys and perhaps Dade and Broward Counties.
Northern raccoons also rest during the day on bare tree limbs, mashed-down eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) nests, and in clumps of Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides) [6,21]. Northern raccoons may change daytime rest sites daily [6].
The eastern gray squirrel, S. carolinensis, common in the eastern half of the United States and extreme southern Canada, is up to 20 in. (51 cm) in total length, 5 in. (13 cm) high at the shoulder, and weighs 1 to 11/2 lb (450-700 grams).
The "Black Squirrel" is actually a variant of the Eastern Gray Squirrel. It is thought that the black variant developed its dark coat to better absorb heat in colder climates.
Florida is home to three species of squirrels, the eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carlinensis), the fox squirrel (Sciurus niger), and the southern flying squirrel (Glaucomys volans). The most common in urban areas is the eastern gray squirrel.
Coyotes are also great scavengers, gleaning road-killed Eastern Gray Squirrels and almost anything else that is edible, including fallen fruit. In fact, at times, up to 90 percent of their diet is vegetation.
