Eastern Newt Species Profile
Three species of newts found in the eastern and central United States are all referred to as 'Eastern Newts.

This page contains samples from our picture files on the Eastern Newt. These images are intended to communicate the sense of awe and wonder I have for these amazing beings.

Eastern Newt (Notophthalmus viridescens)
Description: Small salamanders that live in both aquatic and terrestrial ("eft") forms. The aquatic adult is olive green to greenish brown above, with a yellow, black spotted belly. The tail is flattened.

Eastern newts need small semi-permanent woodland ponds for breeding. They live in forests during their terrestrial (eft) stages, shelter under logs, leaves, rocks and other objects. Aquatic adults are found in pools, usually surrounded by woodland.

This species, like many newts, has a terrestrial phase and an aquatic phase. Eastern Newts in the terrestrial phase, like the one pictured here, are called red efts.

Eastern Newt, Notophthalmus viridescens
The Eastern Newt (and its close relative the Striped Newt, N. perstriatus) are unique in that they undergo two metamorphoses.
