Eastern Painted Turtle C. p. picta was described by Schneider in 1783. This species is very similar to the Midland Painted Turtle in both size and appearance though its range is essentially east of the Midland's range.

The Zoo is also home to many reptiles, including black rat snakes, garter snakes, eastern painted turtles, DeKay’s snakes, red-eared sliders, and ringneck snakes.

They are similar in appearance to the Eastern Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta picta), but have an unusually long, striped neck with a yellow stripe on both the forelegs and rear legs. It has a distinguishable net-like pattern on its carapace.

Common to fairly common in Tennessee, Chattahoochee, and Mobile Bay drainages except portions of Black Warrior and Cahaba Rivers. Includes three intergrading subspecies, C. p. picta (eastern painted turtle), C. p.

In some species, shells may have red, orange, yellow, or grey markings and these markings are often spots, lines, or irregular blotches. One of the most colorful turtles is the eastern Painted Turtle which includes a yellow plastron and a black or ...

with a net-like pattern. Females are usually larger than males. Male shave a longer, thicker tail. The Chicken Turtle resembles the Eastern Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta picta). They spend much of their time basking.
