Eelpout The eelpouts are a family (Zoarcidae) of perciform ray-finned fish. As the name suggests, they are somewhat eel-like in appearance, with elongate bodies and the dorsal and anal fins continuous with the caudal fin.
Each year in early February there is an annual International Eelpout Festival on Leech Lake. There is a black-tie dinner on the lake, ice bowling, and fishing tournament. The anglers who catches the biggest burbot wins a 7-foot-tall trophy.

They are probably far out in northern seas the rest of the year, feeding on fish such as pollock, cod, eelpout, and capelin, supplemented with squid, octopus, and shrimp.
