Television wildlife programmes of African big game crowding water-holes regularly feature passing shots of birds. And the most regularly portrayed is the Egyptian goose introduced to this country three centuries ago.

The Egyptian Goose (Alopochen aegyptiacus) is an Africa species occurring in the Nile Valley and many other locales. The bird shown here was near the Satara Camp, Kruger National Park, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa, in January, 2006.

The male Egyptian goose attracts its mate with an elaborate, noisy courtship display that includes honking, neck stretching and feather displays. Nesting sites can vary widely, ranging from the ground to burrows, cliff ledges and treetops.

The Egyptian Goose is a bird of sub-Saharan Africa in the main although there is a significant population in the Nile Valley.

This non-migratory species from Africa is often kept in waterfowl collections and has been seen twice on site among flocks of migrating Canada Geese. The first record was from Main Ring lake and the second was from the bison field.

There are 14 species of true geese mostly confined to the northern hemisphere, except the Egyptian goose which is found throughout Africa. Geese are medium to large birds with long necks and strong legs. They fly and swim well.

INTERPRETIVE INFORMATION:
The Egyptian Goose is in the tribe of Shelducks. Apart from many duck-like characteristics, they also have external goose-like features. They are often bred in captivity.
