Status Rare in winter, very rare in summer. Its occurrence was first noted by Jones (1868), who recorded a specimen taken in March 1863. Later nineteenth-century accounts added a few more specimens.

Rather mysteriously during a spell of calm over-cast weather at the beginning of November 1993 a remarkable inland arrival of eiders was reported both locally and at reservoirs in the Midlands.

King Eider: Large, regal diving duck with black body and white breast and back. Crown and nape are pale blue; distinct bill is orange-red, sweeping upward into a large, orange basal knob outlined in black.

The King Eider is from the order Anseriformes. Anseriformes are birds, with over 150 species belonging to this order. The majority of these are waterfowl such as ducks, geese, screamers and swans.

The word "eiderdown" is borrowed from this species and describes a bedcover filled with down gathered from the nests of eider ducks.

The Eider is a sea duck distributed round the coasts of northern and western Europe, Greenland, North America and north-east Asia.

Eiders are large seaducks. They breed in the cooler latitudes of the Northern hemisphere.

The saltwater crocodile, Crocodylus porosus (Schneider, 1801), is the largest living reptile. Adult males can reach 6-7 m and weigh between 1000-1,200 kg. Females are much smaller and do not generally exceed 3 m.

They also feed on eggs and nestlings of sparrows, terns, robins, loons and eiders.
Crows build their nests in a manner that it is not easily visible from a distance. The nests are usually built on horizontal branches of deciduous trees.

What does field work entail?
First we would sedate a polar bear with a dart gun. We do standard measurements, like weight and length.

Tribe: Mergini - Sea Ducks and Mergansers (19 species worldwide, including Eiders, Scoters, Bufflehead, Goldeneyes, Harlequin, Long-tailed Duck and Mergansers).
Genus: Histrionicus - A monotypic genus, as the Harlequin has no close relatives.

Though Larus argentatus is a predator of other birds, its attacks on predators sometimes serve to protect birds such as eiders (Somateria mollissima) and puffins (Fratercula artica) which live nearby.

It was something of a consolation prize after my friend Bruce Schneider and I had spent a very long day of hiking hoping unsuccessfully to find Mt. St. Helena Mountain Kingsnakes to admire and photograph.

The Common Eider is one of our faster birds in normal flight with a cruising speed of around 47 mph. Many ducks have been clocked at over 60 mph when under stress.

will patrol the coastal areas looking for whale and walrus carcasses. Sometimes ten to twenty bears may be found feeding together. At this time of year, their diet is more varied, including such land mammals as lemmings, arctic foxes, and eider ducks.
