Eland
Mammal. The world's largest antelope, elands have a somewhat different social structure. Dominant males are solitary and assess each other's strength by locking horns, trying to throw the opponent to the ground.

Elands are the largest of all antelope species. Males are significantly larger than females. Their coat is uniform in color, ranging from grey-brown or fawn, to orange-brown. White vertical flank strips sometimes are present.

Elands originally ranged throughout the savannahs and wooded savannahs of south and central Africa. The herds wandered nomadically in response to seasonal changes.

Eland cows usually give birth just before the rains begin. They almost always bear single calves. Calves wean from 3-6 months old.
Occasionally, eland babies are taken by hyenas or lions. Eland cows are known to attack predators near their calves.

Eland utilize a wide variety of habitats including semi-arid desert, Karoo succulent scrub-veld, subtropical savannah bushveld, valley bushveld thickets, temperate mixed grassland, Highveld & montane sour grassland, and fynbos (Machia).

Elands have been tamed, but not domesticated as yet. Eland can gain 1 1/2 pounds a day on grazing land compared to about 2/3 of a pound in cattle.
OUR ANIMALS:
We have three females and one male.

Eland males are much larger than females, weighing 400-1000 kg compared to 300-600 kg for females. Hides are a uniform fawn color with some vertical white striping on the upper parts.

Eland - Taurotragus oryx
The largest antelope in Africa, the eland is one of the most nervous or skittish animals and take flight at the slightest sign of danger, capable of running for miles without stopping.

Elands are an important food source for many larger predators, especially cheetahs, lions, hyenas, African wild dogs, etc.
They have disappeared from large sections of their former range due mainly to over-hunting and habitat loss.
