Dedicated dads brave the worst winter conditions on the planet to incubate their eggs.

Emperor penguins do not build nests. The male penguin stands upright and incubates a single egg on top of its feet under a loose fold of abdominal skin called a brood patch. The male fasts throughout the courtship, nesting, and incubation period.

Emperor penguins live off the coast of Antarctica. Unlike all other penguins in the Antarctic, emperor penguins do not migrate to warmer climates for the winter months.

Apart from Emperor penguins and flamingoes, pigeons and doves are the only birds to produce food for their chicks. They feed their chicks, called squabs, crop-milk, a protein rich, cottage cheese like secretion from the crop wall.

Brave Breeders: Emperor Penguins (the largest penguins) first begin to breed at approximately five years of age. Emperor penguins travel about 90 km inland to reach the breeding site.

It stood approximately 85-115 cm high, between a modern King Penguin and an Emperor Penguin in size. It is known from bones of a single individual (Otago Museum C.47.20) and possibly some additional material such as the OM C.47.

King Penguins are often confused with Emperor Penguins because they have similar colouration. Like most penguins, they have white bellies, silver-grey backs and blackish heads.

There are 17 penguin species, varying greatly in size. The largest is the emperor penguin at 4 feet tall and about 65 to 90 pounds. The smallest is the little penguin, also known as the blue or fairy penguin, which weighs 2 pounds.

This handsome bird is one of the largest penguin species. It weighs about 33 pounds, second only to the emperor penguin. The king penguin's large size helps it cope with the extreme Antarctic cold and allows it to dive deeper than most penguins.

Unlike their Emperor penguin counterparts, who swim the icy waters of Antarctica, these penguins are at home in the warm waters of coastal Peru. They are very agile in the water and can swim at speeds of up to 30 mph.
