Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) in Southwold, Suffolk, England. A North American River Otter (Lontra canadensis) at the Oregon Zoo. Capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) ...
Eurasian Otters see blue, yellow, and green light but not red; may be an adaptation for seeing underwater where blue-green wavelengths dominate. (Melquist et al 2003) Eyes are orange-red in adults.
Found throughout the region in fresh and salt water, the Eurasian Otter is the only otter native to Britain. A playful animal which has adapted well to aquatic life, otters feed on fish, crustaceans, voles and frogs.
Although many otters are highly social animals and often live in small family groups, the hairy-nosed otter is thought to be a largely solitary species, like its cousin the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra).
Pray for Prey: Otters have very high metabolic rates and burn up energy at a quick pace. Eurasian otters, for example, must eat 15% of their body-weight a day; sea otters, 20 to 25%, depending on the temperature.
