European Eel Anguilla anguilla
Living most of its life in fresh water, the European eel swims thousands of miles down to the sea and across the Atlantic Ocean to the Sargasso Sea to spawn.

The European Eel is a peculiar fish. Its colour varies from brown to silver depending on the stage of life the eel undergoes. Its length is approximately 100 cm (40 in) and its weight is up to 9 kg (20 lb).

European Eel stocks have fallen by at least 90% since the 1970s. This may be due to natural changes, overfishing, pollution and increasing obstacles to their migration in Europe's rivers.
