The Feral Rock Pigeon: Many domestic Rock Pigeons have escaped or been released over the years, and have given rise to the feral pigeon. These show a variety of plumages, although some look very like the pure Rock Pigeons.

Stock doves are rather like, and often mistaken for, feral rock pigeons. This is a shame as they are a quite beautiful and distinct species.

The species commonly referred to just as the "pigeon" is the feral Rock Pigeon.
It is related to the extinct dodo. The young doves and pigeons are called "squabs". A person who keeps pigeons is called a "pigeon fancier".
