Similar Species
American Tree Sparrow has a dark upper bill, a distinct reddish eyestripe, and a spot in the middle of its chest.
Chipping Sparrow has a distinct black eyestripe and white or buffy eyebrow.

The Field Sparrow (Spizella pusilla) is widespread across the eastern half of the United States. There are also isolated records in the west. The individual shown in the top three shots was a singing male near Austin, Travis Co.

The Field Sparrow is a small brown songbird with a light rusty cap and a bright pink bill found in abandoned fields with scattered shrubs and trees in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains and Canada.

Field Sparrow Spizella pusilla. Breeder. Common to fairly common in all seasons in inland regions. In Gulf Coast region, fairly common in winter, spring, and fall. Found in early successional growth areas, especially with dense ground cover.

Similar species include the Field Sparrow and the Grasshopper Sparrow. Field Sparrows are smaller and have a pink bill. Grasshopper Sparrows are also smaller, and have pale streaking on their breast and flanks, a light crown stripe, and a short tail.

Stripped with reddish-brown above and washed with a dingy buff across an unstreaked breast. The tail is long and rounded. Field Sparrow has a smaller pinkish bill. Grasshopper Sparrow has ligher crown and shorter tail.
