The firefly is a long and soft-bodied beetle, about 4.2 to 8.5 mm in length. It has a yellowish-green organ near the end of the abdomen that allows it to produce light.

Firefly squid are one example of the many kinds of squid and octopus that live in the open ocean. The firefly squid has taken bioluminescence to another level from the ctenophore. It has three kinds of photophores, or light generating organs.
