Flying squirrels eat a variety of fruits and nuts, insects, small birds, and meat scraps. Flying squirrels are frequent visitors at bird feeders, and some people have lights at the feeders so they can watch the flying squirrel's antics at night.

Flying squirrels are entirely nocturnal, inhabiting mature forests and parks, as well as other woodlands. They utilize the many cavities that are found in mature trees for nesting and winter denning. Unlike bats, flying squirrels do not really fly.

Flying squirrels do not actually fly, but travel by gliding from one tree to another. This is accomplished by stretching the legs to extend a membrane connecting the front and hind legs.

Flying Squirrels are nocturnal so after sleeping all day, these little fellows will be very playful and full of energy from dusk to dawn. To keep their muscles strong they not only need places to play, but need a regular opportunity to glide.

These flying squirrels possess very soft fur, which is too thin-skinned to be of any commercial value. They are grey brown above and pale grey below. Their eyes are large, dark and shiny and they have some webbing between their toes.

Northern flying squirrels are found throughout most of the forested areas of Canada. They are active in all seasons, but they are rarely seen by humans because of their nocturnal habits.

Meaning of scientific name
Glaucomys': from Greek 'glaukos' meaning 'grey' and 'mys' meaning 'mouse'; 'Volans': from the Latin 'volare' meaning 'flying'.

The Namdapha flying squirrel occurs within Namdapha National Park in Arunachal Pradesh (4). Despite the protection of this large area, it is still affected by human activities, such as those mentioned above.

Range The northern flying squirrel can be found in Canada and the northern United States including Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California, North Dakota, South Dakota, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Wyoming, Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

DESCRIPTION: The southern flying squirrel (Glaucomys volans) is the smallest of all tree squirrels with a normal body weight of two to four ounces and body length of eight to 10 inches.

Flying squirrels have long, flat, fluffy tails that make up almost half their overall length. They have soft, thick, dark brown-and-grey fur above with white undersides.

Flying squirrels live in tall trees in the forest of North America. By gliding through the air among the trees, they avoid ground predators but are still vulnerable to attack by hawks.

The Southern Flying Squirrel, Glaucomys volans, is found in wooded areas statewide except the Keys. It is buff brown to gray with a white underside, large eyes, and a broad, flat 3.5-5" tail. It is 8-10" long.
