Keeping A Watchful Eye

Fox squirrels mate twice a year, typically from December to February and June through July. They nest in hollow trees or in a tree-top den, which is a 12- to 19-inch ball-shaped nest made of leaves, twigs, and bark.

The fox is a clever mammal that has large ears and a long, bushy tail. It lives in many different habitats, including , , , plains, , and . Many live in the area where forests meet farms.

Food Fox Snakes are valuable consumers of rodents, which make up the bulk of their diet. Young Fox snakes may feed on frogs or young mice (Oldfield and Moriarty, 1994). Adults have been known to eat birds and their eggs (Vogt, 1981).

Camouflage

The fox, because of its ability to blend into its surroundings, is given the reputation of being sly and cunning. When we call someone "foxy," we are not always being complimentary.

Fox-Human Interactions
During the breeding season, foxes can be drawn into areas by pet dogs in heat. Usually, they will not attempt to breed or harm a pet dog but are curious as to what the animal is.

FAST FACTS ...

The red fox is mostly nocturnal, although it will sometimes venture out in the day. The red fox, unlike other mammals, hears low-frequency sounds very well.

The arctic fox has a dense, bushy coat and a long, fluffy tail. There are two color phases. For the white phase, the fox has a thick, white coat during the colder, winter months and a shorter brownish to gray coat in the summer.

The fennec fox has very large ears. It is the smallest fox in the world, with the largest ears for its size. In the hot North African desert, its ears help the fox shed body heat. How?

The Bat-eared Fox is the only canid to have largely abandoned mammalian prey in favour of insects.

The red fox is one of 21 species of fox, and the largest member of the fox family. As adults, they hunt alone, not in packs as do wolves or dogs.

As with the red fox, the species has been subjected to rabies epidemics where 20 percent of a local population has died. It is also subjected to predation by other carnivores such as wolves, and has been widely hunted by man for its fur.

Since the arctic fox inhabits the tundra, it possesses a fine undercoat that is thick and dense, and small ears to save body heat. This undercoat insulates its body from the freezing temperatures of the region.

The Pemba flying fox is found only on Pemba Island, Tanzania. The island was originally forested, but only remnants of the primary forest remain. Estimates of the status of the Pemba flying fox have varied considerably recently.

SIZE:
The swift fox, along with the kit fox, is the smallest canid in North America. Weighing approximately 5 pounds, they are about 12 inches in height and 31 inches in length. Males are larger than females.

The Island Flying Fox has a wingspan of approximately three and a half to four feet (1.21 m) and weighs about one and one half pounds (750 gm). Pelage is medium long and silky with a dense underfur.
