The Fox Sparrow (Passerella iliaca) has several distinct subspecies ranging from the dark, sooty colored birds of the Pacific northwest to the reddish colored "Taiga" race in the northeast.

Fox Sparrows winter along the Pacific Coast from southern Alaska to Baja California, across the southern and eastern United States, and down the Atlantic coast from southern Newfoundland to northern Florida.
