Frigate birds are built for flying; they rarely swim and cannot walk but can manage to climb around the trees and bushes in which they nest. They have a very light skeleton and long narrow wings and are masters of the air.

No wonder frigate birds are also known as "man of war" birds. These pirates of the skies are able to catch tropic birds in mid-flight, forcing them to surrender their hard-earned supper. But back on dry land, a hungry tropic bird chick needs feeding?

DESCRIPTION: Anhingas belong to Order Pelecaniformes, as do a number of other primarily aquatic birds (pelicans, cormorants, boobies, and frigate birds).

This adds these two important seabird breeding islands (terns, boobies, frigate birds, tropicbirds) to quite a long list of southern hemisphere oceanic islands that now have World Heritage status.

On Ascension Island, however, the only predators are the frigate birds that take some of the hatchlings. Both male and female make the long voyage to their nesting beaches, generally every other year.
