In the southern hemisphere, the name mollymawk is still well established in some areas, which is a corrupted form of malle-mugge, an old Dutch name for the Northern Fulmar.
Seldom seen from land, this seabird returns to rocky islands only to breed. Along with petrels and fulmars, shearwaters are called tubenoses, because a little pipe, fixed to the top of their bill, covers their nasal holes.
In this country prey is drawn mainly from the selection occurring locally and within a short distance of the nesting place. In coastal areas, for example, puffins, rock doves, fulmars and guillemots are most favoured items of diet.
