The gadfly petrels are seabirds in the bird order Procellariiformes. These medium to large petrels feed on food items picked from the ocean surface.

The Bonin Petrel breeds farther north than any other Pterodroma, or gadfly petrel, in the Pacific Ocean.

The Bermuda Petrel (Pterodroma cahow), is a gadfly petrel. It is commonly known as the Cahow in Bermuda. It is the national bird of Bermuda as well. It is a symbol of hope for natural conservation.

Holding its wings in a sickle shape and flying erratically in heavy winds, the Black-capped Petrel is typical of the gadfly petrels.

Most petrels breed in colonies on islands in the southern hemisphere.
A few of the gadfly petrels breed farther north on islands such as
Madeira, Bermuda, the West Indies, and the Hawaiian Islands.
