Geese have been domesticated for centuries. In the West, farmyard geese are descended from the Greylag, but in Asia the Swan Goose has been farmed for at least as long.
Waterfowl, such as ducks, geese, swans and cranes can cause problems around homes.

Are Geese Pests?
Geese are fascinating birds, although few people know just how unique and interesting they are. The two most widely known species of goose are the Canada goose and the Domestic goose (or Grey goose).

Snow Geese (Chen caerulescens) and Ross's Geese (Chen rossii) both breed in the tundra regions of northern Canada and Alaska and both winter across a wide area of the United States.

Black geese
Black geese are named for the distinctive areas of black plumage. It is these black (and white) markings that can be used to tell the species apart.

Geese are monogamous, living in permanent pairs throughout the year; however, unlike most other permanently monogamous animals, they are territorial only during the short nesting season.

Geese are grazers. They eat large quantities of grasses and forbs in the spring and summer. As the weather turns cooler in the fall, grain, especially corn, becomes a major part of their diet.

Geese and Barnacles
Barnacle geese (Branta leucopsis) are birds, and goose barnacles (genus Lepas) are crustaceans-so why are their common names so similar? Because medieval European monks believed these two species were one and the same.

The geese remain in the Yare valley until the first half of February, leaving over a period of two weeks. Departure is rather earlier in mild winters and somewhat later in cold ones.

Snow Geese form lifelong pairs, usually during their second spring. In a colony, the pair vigorously defends a nest site.

Snow Geese are spotted in the Weaselhead/Glenmore are only occasionally and only during migration. In fact, most Snow Goose reports turn out to be Tundra Swans and, occasionally, American Pelicans.

These geese also have a special type of hemoglobin that absorbs oxygen quicker than other birds; they can also extract more oxygen from each breath than other birds can.

Brent Geese are migratory and the subspecies tend to spend both winter and summer in different areas.

Canada Geese are found throughout North America. There are four subspecies (or populations); each is found in a different area of North America. These subspecies are the southern, northern, western and Aleutian-Canadian populations.

Canada geese that nest in Massachusetts are descendants of geese once kept in captivity to be used as live decoys. These birds were released when the use of live decoys was outlawed in 1935.

Like other geese, Canada geese spend more time on land than ducks do. They are strict vegetarians that feed in the water or on the ground on grasses, sedges, and roots of aquatic plants. They also favor grain left in farmers' fields.

Bar-headed geese are mainly vegetarian. They feed primarily on grasses, roots, stems and other plant parts, as well as on grains, tubers and occasionally seaweed.

The Canada Geese are fond of returning regularly to the place which they have chosen for resting in, and this they continue to do until they find themselves greatly molested while there.

Giant Canada geese have a distinctive white chinstrap that stands out against their black head and neck. They are large birds that love to swim and bathe in the water, especially on warm days.

Lesser Snow Geese
Over 2 million of these geese nest in Canada's north.

Behavior Canada geese migrate in large V-shaped formations. They honk loudly while they are flying. They migrate at a slow pace. Male Canada geese can be very aggressive they will often attack predators with their wings and bill.

Migration: The geese migrate to places where it is warmer and where food is available. Canada Geese migrate in large groups in the familiar V-formation.

Mates for Life: Geese usually mate for life, though a small number will separate and find another mate.

Migrating ducks and geese often fly in V-shape formations. Each bird flies in the upwash of its neighbor's beating wings and this extra bit of supporting wind increases lift, thereby saving energy.
Pigeons can reach speeds up to 100 mph.
