small ape, genus Hyloblates, found in the forests of SE Asia. The gibbons, including the siamang, are known as the small, or lesser, apes; they are the most highly adapted of the apes to arboreal life.

Location and Habitat
Lar gibbons, also known as white-handed gibbons, can be found in many countries and islands throughout southeast Asia.
Gibbons are the only pair-bonded higher primate (with arguable exception of humans; only 3% of mammals and 14% of primates are monogamous). Gibbons live in small family groups consisting of the mated pair and their immature offspring.
Gibbons-16 species of them-swing by their long arms from tree to rainforest tree throughout southeastern Asia, from northeastern India across southernmost China and south through Malaysia and the islands of Indonesia.
Gibbons are forest dwellers, usually found in the canopy. They are found in semideciduous monsoon forests and tropical evergreen forests. Gibbons range from Asia from southern China through eastern Burma, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
Gibbons are highly adapted for their arboreal lifestyle, feeding and sleeping in the trees; the long arms are used to throw themselves from tree to tree, easily covering gaps as wide as 10m (5).
Gibbons have the longest arm length relative to body size of any primate. Arboreal (tree-dwelling) in nature, gibbon arms are longer than their legs, helping them swing from tree to tree.

Gibbon populations have been greatly reduced and fragmented by the encroachment of humans and destruction of their habitats.

The gibbons and orangutans inhabit Southeast Asia. Gibbons live in rain forests and seasonal forests of India, Indochina, and the Malay Archipelago. The orangutan is purely a rain forest animal.

Ecology and Behavior Groups often follow gibbon families or macaque troops, feeding on the fruit which, once gnawed on, is allowed to fall to the ground. For most of the year a group will stay in one area.

They overwinter nearby and move to aquatic retreats in early spring (Gibbons et al. 1977). In the wild, adults prey mostly on fish at night, especially the American eel; digesting prey during daylight hours on land (Neill 1964b).

They especially enjoy fallen fruit and will follow gibbons and other area primates hoping for them to drop fruit. At the Zoo the pigs receive a variety of food.
The Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens participates in 11 SSPs which include the cheetah, ruffed lemur, elephant, Aruba Island rattlesnake, gibbon, black-footed cat, guenon, spider monkey, cotton-top tamarin, rock iguana and clouded leopard.
In South Carolina, most active March-November, sometimes in winter (Gibbons and Semlitsch 1991). Active all year in southern Florida, though less active from January to April than in other months.
