Glaucous Gulls, as only makes sense considering their scientific name, nest in the high Arctic. Larus hyperboreus only make their way south in the winter months, delighting birders whenever they are sighted.

This Herring Gull-sized bird was found off the Farrington Road bridge on 2/15/2004 by Haven Wiley and his avian biology class from UNC.

The Glaucous Gull is a large, very pale gull of the high Arctic. It is the only large gull commonly found in the far north. Small numbers, often juveniles, move well south in the winter.

Warning. There is some doubt about the identification of this bird but I think that it is a 1st summer Glaucous Gull.

Glaucous Gulls are rather uncommon here, preferring to winter more northward, but they have wandered to just about every state at one time or another. Young birds are more often to show up as vagrants.

Glaucous Gull Larus hyperboreus. Rare in winter, spring, and fall in Gulf Coast and Tennessee Valley regions. Found in the Gulf, and on bays, beaches, lakes, and rivers.

PREDATORS : The following predators commonly destroy nests of the greater white-fronted goose: foxes (Alopex lagopus and Vulpes vulpes), jaegers (Stercorarius parasiticus and S. longicaudus), and glaucous gulls (Larus hyperboreus) [10,11].

the adult Iceland Gull is light gray above and white below, with a white head. The bird's yellow bill has a red spot on the bottom, and the feet and legs are pink. Sexes appear alike. Iceland Gulls are easily confused with Thayer's and Glaucous Gulls.

The largest species of the group are the glaucous gull and greater black-backed gull, L. glaucus and L. marinus, of which the former is circumpolar, and the latter nearly so - not being hitherto found between Labrador and Japan.
