The Northen Goshawk (pronounced /ˈɡ's.h"ːk/, from OE. gshafoc 'goose-hawk'), Accipiter gentilis, is a medium-large bird of prey in the family Accipitridae, which also includes other diurnal raptors, such as eagles, buzzards and harriers.
Goshawks and sparrowhawks are small to medium-sized hawks. These formidable birds of prey hunt small mammals and birds in woodlands and forests. They have short broad wings for rapid acceleration and long tails for manoeuvrability.
Goshawks prey on moderately-sized birds and mammals. Blue, Spruce and Ruffed Grouse as well as Red Squirrels and Snowshoe Hares are mainstays. Populations of some of these are cyclical.
Goshawks are mainly perch-and-pounce predators. They wait quietly for prey to appear, then chase them down with an impressive single-mindedness. They have been known to pursuit prey through thickets and tangled understories in woodlands, if need be.
The goshawk feeds mostly on birds and some small mammals. It hunts in trees and thickets and relentlessly pursues its prey, darting in among the branches.

Description
The Northern Goshawk has a blue gray back and pale gray underside, with fine bars on the chest. The top of the head is dark gray and it has a white stripe above the eyes.

Habitat and range
Hawk owls are found in northern forests and bogs. They prefer less dense forests of spruce and tamarack, and like areas next to clearings.

First of all we had the Northern Goshawk (family Accipitridae - Hawks) in our garden once. It had just caught a woodpigeon. We quickly tried to take some pictures but with not a good result.
Predators such as foxes and goshawks may take a few young turkeys, and cold spring rains are also a hazard since the poorly-feathered young birds are easily chilled.
Predators:
Red-Tailed Hawk, Northern Goshawk, the Peregrine Falcon, and the ring-tailed cat.
Locomotion:
They are strong fliers and generally fly at a high altitude. When they fly it is often in a V-formation or a line.
Natural predators include Northern Goshawks, Great Horned Owls and probably other large raptors including Cooper's and Red-tailed Hawks. Fishers prey upon eggs and young in the nest.

The large and widespread Accipiter includes goshawks, sparrowhawks , the Sharp-shinned Hawk and others. These are mainly woodland birds with long tails and high visual acuity, hunting by sudden dashes from a concealed perch.

Females can mate for only a few hours a year, shortly after they emerge from hibernation. After mating (in the burrow) males guard the females from other males, which exposes the males to predation by prairie falcons and goshawks.
