Grass Snakes only show aggression if cornered, hissing loudly and recoiling into a position that looks like they may strike. This is bluff, they rarely bite and if handled often play dead.

Grass snakes are the UK's largest reptile, and can reach up to 1.9m in length. They are one of the few animals that play dead as a defence against predators.

GRASS SNAKES
Any snake with a clear yellow collar will be the ‘true’ Grass Snake Natrix natrix. It is normally found near water and feeds largely on amphibians.

Garter snakes and grass snakes can be kept comfortably in a 10-gallon or 20-gallon aquarium. King snakes, rat snakes, milk snakes, gopher snakes and other colubrids (belonging to the zoological family Colubridae) will be happy in 30-55 gallon tanks.

This ubiquitous species occurs in all Wisconsin counties, and is often referred to as a "grass snake." Two subspecies are present.

This snake is often called the grass snake because of its green color. The smooth part of the name comes from its unkeeled scales which give the snake a sleek, smooth look and texture.

The grass snake is our largest snake and is widespread in England and Wales. It is more commonly found near water where it hunts amphibians and fish.

This is enough to deter many predators although Grass Snakes and hedgehogs are immune. Although the adults spend most of their time on land the females enter ponds and other still waters to lay their eggs.

However, fear of the Adder has sometimes led to the innocent and harmless Grass snakes, Smooth snakes and Slow-worms (legless lizards - not snakes at all), becoming tarred with the same brush and slaughtered unnecessarily.
