Gray foxes mate in January, and three to five pups are born during March through April. The gray fox uses a ground den less frequently than does the red fox, and may often use a hollow tree or log, or a burrow hidden in rock outcroppings.
Gray foxes usually den in crevices in the rocks, in underground burrows, under rocks, in hollow logs, or in hollow trees. In eastern Texas, one was found denning about 10 m above the ground in a large hollow oak.
Gray fox inhabit the woodlands from southeastern to northwestern Minnesota, but are uncommon in the southwestern farmlands and the northeastern forests.

The gray fox, Urocyon cinereoargenteus, is a New World species; it is the only fox that sometimes climbs trees. Found from the N United States to N South America, this fox is slightly larger, on the average, than the North American red fox.
The Gray Fox, Urocyon cinereoargenteus, are found in densely wooded areas through the state except for the Keys. It is silver gray with reddish sides and a white underside.
Compared with the gray fox, island foxes are relatively diurnal (active during the day). They communicate with one another through sight, sound, and smell.
