StatusThree records. One specimen was shot at Northport, Cumberland County, in June 1903 and another taken in Pictou County before 1882 (Gilpin 1881).

Great gray owls use nests that were abandoned by hawks or ravens, or build their nests from sticks in evergreen trees. Each female lays two to five eggs. She sits on them while the male hunts.

I've seen 36 Great Gray Owls in my life. All 36 were in a 1 1/2 day span in December 2004 at Sax-Zim Bog in northern Minnesota.

There are about ten different subspecies of Great Horned Owls in its present range, and they vary in size and color; however, the general appearance of each race is similar. In the New World, only the Great Gray Owl and the Snowy Owl are larger.
