SCIENTIFIC NAME: Bubo Virginianus
DESCRIPTION: The largest of all owl species occurring in Alabama and the southeast, the great horned owl stands approximately 18 to 25 inches tall and has a wingspan up to 60 inches.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Size and color of the great horned owl varies with regard to distribution. At higher latitudes and altitudes the owls are larger, with lengths of 20 inches in Alaska and 21 inches in the high Andes.

Great Horned Owls are uncommon in the Weaselhead/Glenmore area all year round. In other words, while there is almost certainly at least one of these owls in the park every day of the year, they are not seen or reported very often by park visitors.

Family: Strigidae (STRIJ-ih-dee). The Typical Owl Family, includes about 140 owls except for barn owls and bay owls.
Great horned owls also have strong feet and sharp claws for grasping their victim, as well as a curved beak to tear it into bite-size chunks.

Status Uncommon resident. Breeds. Once one of our common owls, it has become scarcer in recent decades.
Great Horned Owls capture a wide variety of prey that ranges in size from shrews and mice, to jack rabbits. They have been known to take prey as large as a porcupine.
Great horned owls begin nesting in January or February. They usually lay their eggs in abandoned nests of squirrels, hawks or crows but sometimes nest on cliff ledges or in hollow trees. Female owls lay one to five eggs, which hatch in 30 to 37 days.
Great horned owls may be active during the day or night, but are mostly nocturnal. During the day they only cover about 1 square mile, so it is rare to spot them in daylight.

A Great Horned Owl had a nest in the Pines Trail. With a scope were able to get my 4 year old granddaughter Carolyn to see the baby birds. After a storm in early May the babies fledged and were seen roosting in various trees.

The Brown Fish Owl of southeast Asia is similar in appearance to the familiar Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus), its closest relative in North America. Both species are characterized by large size, cryptic coloration and prominent ear tufts.

The call is not a hoot, as is expected with most owls, it is more of a hiss or screech. The juvenal Great Horned Owls have a similar screech. The Barn Owl lacks ear tufts. A nocturnal owl. Length is 16" (about the size of a Cooper's Hawk).
It's a myth that the parents will not care for young birds that have been touched by humans. In fact, birds have a poor sense of smell. Great horned owls kill and eat skunks without even noticing their overpowering stench.
