Great spotted woodpeckers have become common visitors to gardens all over most of the British Isles, with the notable exception of Ireland (where there are no woodpeckers).
The Great Spotted Woodpecker is a pied woodpecker: black with a large white shoulder patch and scarlet underneath the tail. It is much larger than the other British pied woodpecker, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker.
To the left a young Green Woodpecker (Picus viridis) and to the right the very common Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major).
The enormous Black Woodpecker visited our garden only once, during which visit we were unable to take pictures.
