The Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) occurs in the Caribbean and can sometimes gather in large numbers along the coast of Yucatan, Mexico.

Greater flamingos live and feed in groups called flocks or colonies. They find safety in numbers, which helps to protect individual birds from predators while their heads are down in the mud. Greater flamingos also breed while gathered in groups.

The greater flamingo's worst enemy is man. They are not a food species, although flamingo tongues were considered a delicacy in ancient Rome.

The greater flamingo has and pink feathers and black-tipped wings. It has a very long neck, long pink legs and webbed pink feet with three toes. It has a large hooked bill with a black tip that is curved down.
