Description
The Green Turtle has a small head and strong paddle-shaped front flippers. It gets its name from the colour of its fat rather than the colour of its shell.

Green turtles are found in tropical and portions of subtropical oceans worldwide. They are found in the Atlantic Ocean from the eastern United States along coastal South America to South Africa.

Although it is illegal to hunt green turtles, they are still killed for their flesh and for their shells, which are used for jewellry and ornaments.

Green turtles, named for their green body fat, were valued by European settlers in the New World for their meat, hide, eggs, and "calipee" (the fat attached to the lower shell that formed the basis of the popular green turtle soup).

Male green turtles spend virtually their entire lives at sea. They are born on land and are only rarely sighted on beaches. Green turtles migrate hundreds of miles to breeding grounds to mate.

Here is the little green turtle that has been sold by the thousands in pet and variety stores. Perhaps the most distinctive marking is the broad reddish patch behind each eye. In rare instances, the red is replaced by yellow.

The Atlantic Green Turtle, Chelonia mydas, nests along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts (primarily from Brevard to Palm Beach County) in May and June. It has a broad, oval, dark brown or olive shell.

Populations of the green turtle have been steadily declining and the species is now considered threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act.

The East Pacific subpopulation of the green turtle has been classified as a separate species in the past as the black turtle. However, DNA evidence indicates that it is not evolutionarily distinct from the green turtle.

Green (Chelonia mydas): Medium- to large-sized, brownish turtle with mottled patterns of markings on its shell. The green sea turtle usually lives among sea grass. The green turtle measures 36 to 43 inches and weighs 200 to 300 pounds.

Some which I kept on board the Marion would swallow, in the space of half an hour, a bucketful of young mullets; and when fed on the flesh of green turtles, they would eat several pounds at a meal.

Green turtles only lay their eggs at the beach where they themselves were born, while salmon only deposit eggs in their birth stream. These migrations may last as little as year or may take many years to complete.
