Greenland Shark Somniosus microcephalus
The sluggish Greenland shark has a heavy, cylindrical body that is usually brown or gray. It has a short, rounded snout and two equal-sized dorsal fins.

 


Greenland Shark
The Greenland shark, Somniosus microcephalus, is also called the sleeper shark and the gurry shark. This large, slow-swimming shark has glow-in-the-dark eyes. It lives in very deep waters of the North Atlantic Ocean.

The Greenland shark, Somniosus microcephalus (Bloch and Schneider, 1801), aka sleeper shark, is named for its lethargic behavior and Somniosus, which refers to "sleep", and microcephalus which means "small head.

Killer whales and Greenland sharks preyed upon narwhals, but the main enemy of narwhals is man. Since some believe their tusks possess almost magical healing and aphrodisiac properties, they are still illegally hunted today.

The main predators of harp seals are polar bears, killer whales, Greenland sharks, and walruses. Humans also kill harp seals for food, fur, and oil. ("Harp Seals", 2004; Kovacs, 1995; "Pagophilus groenlandicus: Harp Seal", 2009; Schliemann, 1990) ...

Most sharks and rays do not have pyloric caeca, the exceptions being the Greenland Shark (Somniosus microcephalus)and some skates.
