Common Ground-Dove

The Common Ground-Dove (Columbina passerina) is a resident species of the southern United States from California to Florida and South Carolina. The species occurs all the way south into northern South America.

The Common Ground-Dove is normally found only in the southern tier of states in the continental U.S., but does tend to wander widely to the north. A quite tame bird, they will often remain sitting in a location until almost stepped upon.

Last recorded in 1927, only 2 specimens exist. Declared extinct in 2005.

The various islands also support more adaptable civilized species like Mourning Dove, Common Ground-Dove, and Rock Pigeon.

Other wild American species are the band-tailed, red-billed, and white-crowned pigeons, all of the genus Columba, and the reddish brown ground-doves (genus Columbina).

In the city we had: Southern Lapwing, Austral Thrush, Eared Dove, Picui Ground-Dove, Austral Blackbird. The bus climbed the narrow road to the ski area in the Andean Mountains.

Recently fledged Mourning Doves have a scaly pattern similar to Inca Dove and Common Ground-Dove. Inca Dove's scales are finer and black, and the tail is long and square-tipped.

Inca Doves are small gray doves with a strong "scaled" pattern. The wings flash rufous when it flys. The tail is longer and more square than the Common Ground-Dove.
