Ground Parrots The Ground Parrot or Ground Parakeet (Pezoporus wallicus wallicus) is also known as the Eastern Ground Parrot, ...
Typical Ground Parrot Habitat. The Ground Parrot walks in the heather without making much disturbance. To see it on the ground you have to get lucky. This is also good habitat for the Beautiful Firetail Finch which I saw here on my first visit.
Only the Monk Parakeet and five species of Agapornis lovebird build nests in trees,[28] and three Australian and New Zealand ground parrots nest on the ground.
A close relationship to the ground parrot has long been recognised. Molecular work confirms that the two species should be placed within the same genus, Pezoporus.
Most species spend most of their time perched or climbing in tree canopies. They often use their bills for climbing by gripping or hooking on branches and other supports. On the ground parrots often walk with a rolling gait.
