Mice, rabbits, ground squirrels, pocket gophers. Kills by constriction.
LIFE CYCLE/SOCIAL STRUCTURE: ...

The main proximate cause of mortality was predation by small mammals including red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) and arctic ground squirrels (Spermophilus parryii). Littermates tended to live or die together more often than by chance.

Golden eagle predominant prey is leporids (hares and rabbits) and sciurids (ground squirrels, prairie dogs & marmots), the two groups normally comprising 50-94% of the diet of nesting eagles.

: Prairie dogs are closely related to the ground squirrel, from which they may be distinguished by their larger size, stouter bodies, and shorter tails. They have well-developed thumbs with powerful claws.

They eat primarily small mammals, such as eastern cottontail rabbits, thirteen-lined ground squirrels, and white-footed mice. They occasionally eat birds, snakes, large insects and other large invertebrates.

This Woodrat sometimes appropriates the burrow of a ground squirrel or Kangaroo Rat, and will fortify the entrance with sticks and cactus spines. It is 8.5 to 15 inches long, buff-gray above, gray below, with hind feet white.

North American Badgers (Taxidea taxus) are carnivorous and prey predominantly on pocket gophers (Geomyidae), ground squirrels (Spermophilus), moles (Talpidae), marmots (Marmota), prairie dogs (Cynomys), woodrats (Neotoma), kangaroo rats (Dipodomys), ...

Pocket gophers, meadow mice, voles, shrews, ground squirrels, rabbits, squirrels, birds and birds' eggs, frogs, and lizards are consumed. They kill larger prey by constriction and simply swallow smaller prey alive.

Small mammals, especially mice, rats, gophers, and ground squirrels, are also important food items. Other prey animals include: reptiles and amphibians, scorpions, young cottontail rabbits, bats, and birds, such as sparrows and horned larks.

Chipmunks and thirteened-lined ground squirrels are favorite foods and can be quickly dug out of their own burrows. Badgers also feed on skunks, reptiles, rabbits, snail, insects, eggs of ground-nesting birds and an occasional carcass.

Usu nest in small colonies within ground squirrel and prairie dog colonies. Pair bond usu > 1 year.

Ground squirrels and other so-called "true hibernators" have hibernating body temperatures approaching 32º F. The animals take many minutes to rouse but waken periodically to feed and excrete.

Some species of gopher, such as the Richardsons ground squirrel, are known to hibernate during the cold northern winters.

The Golden Eagle feeds mostly on rodents (rabbits and ground squirrels) but has also been known to attack small lambs and turkeys. Like most eagles it also eats carrion and will feed on dead lambs.

There are three types: tree squirrels (with bushy tails), ground squirrels (with a non-bushy tail), and flying squirrels (who cannot really fly, but can glide up to 150 feet=46 m using a flap of skin).

Found living in large colonies (up to 30 animals), it is not unusual to find them sharing burrows with Mongooses, Ground Squirrels, and other small rodents. As social creatures, they perform different tasks to benefit the group.

We noticed one of the little ground squirrels off the side of the dirt road was considering scooting into a hole but seemed confused by the idea. It would almost go down, then stop and circle the perimeter as if unsure.

Danger Posture: Another characteristic trait of several types of squirrels, especially ground squirrels, is their tendency to rise on their hind legs and curl their paws flat against their chests when they sense any kind of danger.

For many animals such as the bighorn sheep and the antelope ground squirrel, cactus are an important source of food and water. The cactus wren and California thrasher often build their nests in the buckhorn cholla.

Sometimes it pairs up with coyotes for hunting ground squirrels. The coyote sees the ground squirrel diving into its hole but can't get it. The badger comes over and digs into the hole, scaring the squirrels out.

The chicks' fecal sacs are carried at least 45 feet from the nest, as a defense against predators, which include Townsend's ground squirrel and Common Raven. Juvenile Sage Sparrows form flocks before joining adults for migration.

Keep grounds and trash areas clean and free of cover to dissuade the populations of mice, rats, ground squirrels, voles, and other rodents which are attractive to snakes.

The Five Species: The prairie dog is considered a ground squirrel. There are five species of prairie dog: the black-tailed prairie dog, the white-tailed prairie dog, the Gunnison's prairie dog, the Utah prairie dog and the Mexican prairie dog.

Sociable: live in colonies (avg. 24 but up to 30) often with other mongoose species, ground squirrels or small rodents
