Grouse are a group of birds from the order Galliformes. They are often considered a family Tetraonidae, though the American Ornithologists' Union and many others include grouse as a subfamily Tetraoninae in the family Phasianidae.

Description
The Ruffed Grouse is a stocky chicken-shaped bird. The male has a large dark neck ruff and crest, with two or more white spots on the rump feathers.

The Sooty Grouse (Dendragapus fuliginosus) is a recent "split" from the Blue Grouse complex. The Sooty Grouse is a bird of the coastal mountains of the western United States and Canada.

Blue Grouse breed from Yukon south along the coast into California and in the mountains into Arizona and New Mexico. In Alberta, it occurs in the southwestern part, along the foothills country.

This grouse lives in young, middle aged to mature Michigan jack pine forests, as well as dense spruce, fir, cedar, and tamarack swamps, in the Lower and Upper peninsulas. It is larger than a pigeon and stands about 15 to 17 inches in height.

Ruffed Grouse, with the binomial name 'Bonasa umbellus' was ordained by the General Assembly of Pennsylvania, as a state bird on 22nd June, 1931.

BLACKCOCK (Tetrao tetrix), the English name given to a bird of the family Tetraonidae or grouse, the female of which is known as the grey hen and the young as poults.

The following groups are generally recognized: Megapodiidae (megapodes), Cracidae (currasows, guans, chachalacas), Phasianidae (phasianid galliforms including: pheasants, partridges and francolins, turkeys, and grouse).

Efforts in these and other states to preserve western brush lands for other species, like the Greater Sage-Grouse, Gunnison Sage-Grouse, and the California Gnatcatcher, may benefit this sparrow.

Turkey poults are "precocial", like grouse chicks and ducklings. That is, their eyes are open, they have a warm downy plumage, and they are capable of responding to the hen and following her about within about 1 day after hatching.

For many years, gamekeepers persecuted peregrines because of their liking for grouse, and their eggs have been prized by collectors.

Birds up to the size of grouse, domestic foul, pheasant, partridge and even smaller owls (up to and including records of Long-eared Owls) will be taken.

This family contains pheasants, turkeys, grouse and ptarmigans. Most species have spurs on the tarsus and the hind toe that faces backwards is elevated so that it does not touch the ground. Many members of this family have been domesticated.

In contrast, Blue Grouse in the mountains of North America move as little as a kilometer down the slopes to a lower altitude for the winter months and then return up the mountainside in the spring.

The birds prey upon a variety of creatures from prairie dogs, cottontail rabbits, jackrabbits and ground squirrels to grouse, ducks, chukars, reptiles and smaller birds.

FEEDING HABITS:
The Goshawk feeds on rabbits, hares, squirrels, grouse, pigeons, small birds and mammals. They catch their prey by approaching from cover. The Goshawk is not known for eating carrion.

The bark of this and related firs is browsed by deer, elk, bighorn sheep, and moose; the leaves are eaten by grouse, and the seeds are consumed by songbirds and mammals. The scientific name, meaning "hairy-fruited," refers to the cones.

Diet
Groundhogs, marmots, foxes, skunks, cats, rabbits, grouse, ground squirrels, crows, pheasants, meadowlarks, tortoises, and snakes.

Although their diets consist primarily of snowshoe hares (90%), they will also eat the fresh meat of grouse, squirrels, red fox, and small rodents. Lynx migrate when prey is no longer abundant.
