Like many guan species, the piping guan plays a very important role in the ecology of tropical forests. Its habit of eating fruits and seeds (and pooping out the remains) helps disperse the seeds of trees throughout the forest.

White-crested Guan (Penelope pileata)
A Brazilian endemic, the White-crested Guan is considered as a "Near Threatened" species.

No other piping-guan is found in its range, though the Gray's Piping-guan (Aburria cumanensis grayi) approaches it in Paraguay. This bird has a pale bluish pendulous wattle, a smaller wing patch, and an entirely naked white face and white forehead.

Then we hiked down the trail to the location of a known Royal Flycatcher nest getting a fleeting look at a Spinx Guan. The nest hung over a small creek near a small shelter built to house a water pump.

One fair afternoon we came in view of the renowned Harbour of Whapati Guan, and already saw its curious beacon, which, being in form like a huge mounted cannon placed on the elevated crest of a great rock, produced a most striking effect.

The Plain Chachalaca (Ortalis vetula) is member of the guan family which ranges from extreme south Texas southward to Costa Rica.
