The Pigeon Guillemot (Cepphus columba) is a bird of the Pacific coast of North America from Alaska to southern California.

Guillemots are the most common auk found in the British Isles. During spring these perky seabirds gather in massive and tightly packed breeding colonies, known as loomeries, on coastal cliffs and rock stacks.

Guillemots are best seen at the nesting colonies, from March to the end of July.
What they eat
Fish and crustaceans ...

The Guillemots pair during their migrations;--many of them at least do so.

Black Guillemots generally feed near shore, diving to the sea bed where they probe for fish and invertebrates among rocky recesses and vegetation in the shallow water.

Black Guillemot: Call is a weak, high-pitched whistle of "peeee."

Black Guillemot: Pigeon Guillemot has dark wing linings and axillaries, and black bar on white shoulder patch.

Black Guillemots breed, usually in colonies, along rocky shores on coastal cliffs and at their base amongst boulders. They also uses artificial sites such as holes in breakwaters. The nest is just a cup of small stones.

Thick-billed Murre (known as Brünnich's Guillemot in the UK) is seen about once a decade in NC, but almost never relocated.

A special interest attaches to the great auk (Alca impennis), owing to its recent extinction and the value of its eggs to collectors. (See GAREFOWL; also GUILLEMOT, PUFFIN, RAZORBILL.)

In British Columbia, prey remains found below a nest in a Sitka spruce included rhinoceros auklets (Cerorhinca monocerata), Cassin's auklets, pigeon guillemots (Cepphus columba), fork-tailed storm-petrels, and marbled murrelets [38].

In this country prey is drawn mainly from the selection occurring locally and within a short distance of the nesting place. In coastal areas, for example, puffins, rock doves, fulmars and guillemots are most favoured items of diet.
