Identification Tips: ...

Gunnison sage-grouse
TAXONOMY:
The scientific name for the genus of sage-grouse is Centrocercus.

Gunnison Sage-Grouse very similar but has different range. Large size, grayish plumage, long pointed tail, and black belly eliminate all other grouse species.

Efforts in these and other states to preserve western brush lands for other species, like the Greater Sage-Grouse, Gunnison Sage-Grouse, and the California Gnatcatcher, may benefit this sparrow.

The greater sage-grouse was considered conspecific with the Gunnison Sage-Grouse (Centrocerus minimus) until 2000, when the two were declared separate species by the American Ornithological Union.
