In areas where gypsy moths abound, avoid placing boxes in oak trees, which are favored by the gypsy moths.

The caterpillar of the Gypsy moth causes severe damage to forests in the North East USA, where it is an exotic species. In temperate climates the Codling moth causes extensive damage, especially to fruit farms.

The modifier gypsy has been applied to the common names of several species, including the gypsy moth, a negative use referring to the species' parasitic lifestyle, and gypsy herring, a reference to this fish's long migrations.

Many current activities, such as gypsy moth spraying, right-of-way and private property maintenance, property development, forest management, and grazing all have the potential to result in the "incidental take" or killing of Karner blue butterflies.

Another exotic species, the gypsy moth, is headed southward. This insect defoliates oak trees, weakening them. Not only could the bears food source of acorns be affected, but some of the prime denning spots in old growth trees may be lost.

The Yellow-billed Cuckoo is one of the few birds that eat many hairy caterpillars like Tent Caterpillars or Gypsy Moth larvae. It catches its food by hopping and flying among the leaves and waiting to pick up something tasty.

Their favorite foods (and one of the few birds to eat them) are hairy caterpillars like the invasive gypsy moth and our native tent caterpillar. They also eat other insects, spiders, small invertebrates and fruit.

They eat many pest species, including tent caterpillars, gypsy moth caterpillars, fall webworms, spiny elm caterpillars, and the larvae within plant galls.

Other factors potentially leading to the drastic declines include reduction of hard mast from outbreaks of the gypsy moth and chestnut blight, increased human disturbance to colonies, and habitat fragmentation (Castleberry 2000).

For many temperate forest trees, these fungi have been shown to be an essential element in order for trees to prosper. White-footed mice also help control populations of some harmful insect pests, such as gypsy moths.
