Hairy Woodpeckers
Member of the Picidae Family: Woodpeckers ... Sapsuckers ... Flickers ...

The Hairy Woodpecker nests in cavities excavated in dead (snags) or living trees (Oberholser 1974) as well as in dead or diseased portions of living trees (Winkler et al. 1995).

The Hairy Woodpecker (Picoides villosus) is a widespread, resident bird across most of North America. It may be found in a wide variety of habitats from lowland southeastern pine forest to high in the Rocky Mountains.

The Hairy Woodpecker (Picoides villosus) is a medium-sized woodpecker.
Adults are mainly black on the upper parts and wings, with a white back, throat and belly and white spotting on the wings. There is a white bar above and below the eye.

Among the North American woodpeckers are the sociable downy woodpecker, Picus pubescens (about 61/2 in./17 cm long); the similar but larger hairy woodpecker, P.

The white stripe down the middle of the black back pretty much tells you it's either a Downy or Hairy Woodpecker, and the red patch signifies a male.

The Downy Woodpecker and the Hairy Woodpecker both have white backs rather than the black and white ladder found on the Red-cockaded Woodpecker.

The Downy Woodpecker varies geographically in size and plumage color and pattern, generally paralleling similar variation in the Hairy Woodpecker (Picoides villosus), although not as pronounced (Jackson 1970c, James 1970, Ouellet 1977).

The Downy is a small, 6-inch black and white woodpecker. Males have a small red patch on the nape. The Hairy Woodpecker is similar, but it is larger (about 9 inches) with a larger bill.

The larger and somewhat similar Hairy Woodpecker (Picoides villosus) and, less commonly, the smaller Downy Woodpecker (P. pubescens) may occur alongside Red-cockaded Woodpeckers.

In North America the Downy woodpecker is (six and a half inches long), the larger hairy woodpecker; the red crested pileated woodpecker or logcock , about 17 in.
