Flatfish - common name for any member of the unique and widespread order Pleuronectiformes containing over 500 species 130 of which are American.

 


A halibut is a type of flatfish from the family of the righteye flounders (Pleuronectidae). This name is derived from Dutch heilbot. Halibut live in both the North Pacific and the North Atlantic Oceans, and are highly regarded food fish.

It was last recorded as a breeding bird on 18 June 1941, when a visit to the Bird (or Halibut) Islands off Harrigan Cove, Halifax County, revealed a colony of about 25 pairs just beginning to nest (R.W. Tufts).

Fish such as salmon, hake, halibut, mackerel and tunas are common prey, as are marine mammals such as harbor porpoises and harbor seals. However whites also eat other sharks, sea turtles and seabirds.

Only the largest fish (such as halibut and ling cod) and marine mammals are any threat to adults.

Harp seals have a varied diet of fish such as capelin, polar and Arctic cod, herring, sculpin, Greenland halibut, redfish, and plaice. They also consume crustaceans such as amphipods, euphausids (krill), and decapods (shrimps and prawns).

Their prey is predominantly composed of Greenland halibut, polar and Arctic cod, shrimp and Gonatus squid.

Food
deep water fish including redfish, herring, cod, halibut, and flounder. Also eats shrimp, octopus and mussels.

This type of fishing targets halibut, black cod and dogfish. The only environmental impact is that this fishing method sometimes catches fishes that it is not targeting.
