The hammerhead shark (genus Sphyrna) is a member of the family Sphyrnidae. The eight species of hammerhead range from 2-6 m long, and all species have projections on both sides of the head that give it a resemblance to a flattened hammer.

Hammerhead sharks of the genus Sphyrna are members of the family Sphyrnidae. The only other genus of Sphyrnidae, Eusphyra, contains only one species, Eusphyra blochii, the winghead shark.

Great hammerheads are potentially dangerous, only a few shark attacks can be attributed to the great hammerhead because of the apparent difficulty of distinguishing large hammerhead species involved in attacks.

Species is a smaller member of the hammerhead family with a unique narrow shovel-shaped head. Head is noticeably more rounded in appearance than with other members of Sphyrnidae. Additionally, the head lacks indentations on its anterior edge.
Hammerheads, the Requiem Sharks such as the Bull Shark and the Tiger Sharks, the Basking Shark and the Smooth Dogfish fall into this category. Dogfish have the longest known gestation period of any shark, at 18 to 24 months.
Its thick square crest is the origin of its name. Hammerkop means hammerhead in Dutch. It has black legs and a black bill tipped with hook.
