HAMSTER, a European mammal of the order Rodentia, scientifically known as Cricetus frumentarius (or C. cicetus), and belonging to the mouse tribe, Muridae, in which it typifies the sub-family Cricetinae.

How could the hamster possibly be an endangered species when we see them in every pet store we visit?
The hamster is a small, burrowing rodent that lives in the wild in parts of Asia and Europe. Many people now keep hamsters as household pets. Hamsters are nocturnal (most active at night).
Most hamsters do not smell if they are cleaned regularly. When cleaning, the sawdust and old food should be thrown away and the cage base washed and dried. Place fresh sawdust in the cage, along with new bedding if necessary.

If it takes them, start rubbing killed mice on gerbils to scent them, and offer the mice (a killed gerbil can be used repeatedly if kept frozen and defrosted when needed for scenting). Try hamsters if you can't get gerbils.
