Harbor Porpoise Phocoena phocoena
One of the most common cetaceans in the Northern Hemisphere, the harbor porpoise, as its name suggests, rarely strays into deep water. It prefers shallow, coastal waters and sometimes swims into rivers.

Harbor porpoises are found singly, in pairs, or in small groups of 6-10 animals, however larger groups between 50-100 animals have been observed feeding.

Common in the Gulf of Maine, but not a boat followers and not usually seen from whale watching boats. Appears only briefly on the surface and then swims away underwater.

The Harbor Porpoise
The Harbor Porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) is the most widely seen porpoise, sometimes earning it the nickname "common porpoise.

Harbor Porpoises were traditionally hunted for food and especially fat used for lighting purposes in Denmark, especially in the Little Belt strait. Currently, however, this species is not subject to commercial whaling.

sinus are physically similar to the Harbor Porpoise (/Phocoena phocoena/) in many ways with an exception being that the vaquita is more slender.

Fish such as salmon, hake, halibut, mackerel and tunas are common prey, as are marine mammals such as harbor porpoises and harbor seals. However whites also eat other sharks, sea turtles and seabirds.

The vaquita (Phocoena sinus), also known as the Gulf of California harbor porpoise, is is the smallest and rarest of the cetaceans - which include whales, dolphins, and porpoises. Vaquitas are very rarely seen in the wild.
