Hatchetfish can regulate the intensity and color of light from these organs to match the light filtering down. Each species of hatchetfish has its own particular pattern of lights.

The river hatchetfish is a schooling species best kept in groups of five or more that spends most of its time in the top-level of the water where it searches for food.

Lovely Hatchetfish Argyropelecus aculeatus
An expert at hiding from predators, the hatchetfish's silvery coloration and use of bioluminescence conceals it against the downwelling light. They are also so thin that they are difficult to see head-on.
