The Black Hawk-Eagle is distributed from Mexico through Central America and south to north-east Argentina and south-east Brazil although it seems to be missing from much of Venezuela.

In 2004, a pair of Mountain Hawk-eagles Spizaetus nipalensis smuggled in hand luggage from Thailand to Belgium was found to have the disease.

Predators: Predators of the Quetzals include the kinkajou, the gray squirrel, the Ornate Hawk-eagle and owls.
