The hawksbill turtle, Eretmochelys imbricata, rarely strays north from the tropics where it lives near coral reefs. Hawksbill turtles have a distinct, hawk-like beak. Adults range in size from 0.8-1.

Hawksbill turtles are most commonly found in hard-bottomed and reef habitats containing sponges. They also reside in shoals, lagoons of oceanic islands, and continental shelves. In general, they are found in water no deeper than sixty feet (18.3 m).

Hawksbill turtles are found throughout the tropical waters of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. They avoid deep waters, preferring coastlines where sponges are abundant and sandy nesting sites are within reach.

Hawksbill turtles are omnivorous with a diet that consists primarily of sponges. They are selective feeders choosing only certain species of sponges, some of which are toxic to other animals.

The hawksbill turtle is found all over the world in warmer waters, and remains one of its enduring wonders. Generally solitary, it undertakes long-distance migrations, using instincts and environmental cues as a guide.

Two hawksbill turtles seen by others in our snorkeling group swam off before I could catch up. But the third was gracious enough to hang around on the coral reef below for quite awhile, even stopping for a while right beneath me.

Habitat: Hawksbill turtles are found in warm oceans world-wide. They can be found along Atlantic seaboard of the Southeast during the summer months, but incidence is rare. Most U.S.

Tortoiseshell, a traditional decorative ornamental material used in Japan and China, is derived from the carapace scutes of the hawksbill turtle. The use of marine turtle shells for decorative purposes is by no means limited to the orient.

Hawksbill turtles feed mostly on sponges while Kemp's ridley sea turtle eat crabs and other crustaceans. Leatherbacks, the largest sea turtle, feed primarily on jellyfish.

The hawksbill turtle is the source of the term "tortoise shell" because of the pattern of markings on its shell. Their beautiful shells were once prized until the hunting of sea turtles became illegal.
