In a secluded thicket near Page Springs in the Verde Valley, I first spotted this Hermit Thrush plucking berries from a bush that was covered in fruit.

The Hermit Thrush (Catharus guttatus) breeds across much of the northern two thirds of the United States and Canada including the Rocky Mountain areas.

Hermit Thrushes first appear in Calgary backyards during the snows of late April and early May.

The Hermit Thrush (Catharus guttatus) is about 6.5 inches long, greyish brown with rusty rump and tail. Underparts are white with brown spots. It has a white eye ring.
