Herring Gulls are common in the Weaselhead/Glenmore Park area during spring and fall migration periods. Outside of these periods they range from rare to uncommon during summer months to absent during winter months.

Herring gulls belong to a complex of gulls, all of which share similarities and may be confused with one another. Because of hybridization and other factors, the taxonomy of gulls is complicated.

Herring Gull Larus argentatus. Occasional breeder. Common in winter, spring, and fall, and rare in summer in Gulf Coast and Tennessee Valley regions.

This Herring Gull-sized bird was found off the Farrington Road bridge on 2/15/2004 by Haven Wiley and his avian biology class from UNC. I photographed it on 2/17 in fairly dim, snowy conditions.

Large numbers of harbor porpoises are caught in fishing nets, because the porpoises feed on schooling fish such as herring and mackerel, in relatively shallow coastal waters.

And many fish live in Rock Creek, including blue-gilled sunfish, red-nosed dace, and blueback herring. “Rock Creek Park recently took down seven barriers to herring and other migratory fish,' says Gough.

The blackfin cisco, also known as the jumbo herring, was once found in lakes Huron, Michigan, Ontario, and Superior. It was a silver fish with black fins and a black stripe on its spine.

They like to hunt schools of fish but will also eat squid, herring, and anchovies. The average porpoise will take in 4% to 9% of their body weight in fish daily.

Northern Gannets feed primarily on surface-dwelling fish, such as herring and mackerel. To catch them, a gannet will dive from heights up to about 43 m (141 ft.), plummeting into the water at great speed and with considerable force.

It is slightly smaller than the Herring Gull, but resembles it in all plumages. The California Gull has a bright yellow bill with a red spot at the gonys.
